Wind City tips for tourists

  • The ramparts overlooking the Atlantic are Essaouira's defining experience. Walk them at sunset for the best light - and wind.
  • The port fish market is working and open. Buy fresh grilled fish directly from vendors by the boats - 30-60 MAD for a full plate.
  • The medina is relaxed by Moroccan standards - fewer touts than Marrakech or Fes. More artist galleries, musicians, and argan oil shops.
  • Kitesurfing and windsurfing: Essaouira is world-class. Several schools on the beach south of town. Beginner lessons from ~400 MAD/day.
  • The annual Gnaoua World Music Festival (June) draws thousands. Book accommodation months ahead if visiting then.
  • Argan oil is local and genuine here - better quality and lower prices than tourist shops in Marrakech. Buy from cooperatives for authenticity.

Money in Essaouira

  • ATMs available near Place Moulay Hassan and on Avenue de l'Istiqlal. Withdraw in the new town - medina ATMs run out. See all money & payment options for Morocco.
  • Restaurants range: tourist-facing around Place Moulay Hassan charge more. The fish grill stalls by the port are the local standard.
  • Most riad accommodation requires cash or bank transfer - confirm before arriving.
