Blue City tips

  • The blue paint isn't just walls - the entire medina is pedestrian. You can't get a taxi inside. Hotels will store your luggage while you explore.
  • Sunrise in the medina (before 8am) is quiet and magical. By 10am, tourist groups arrive. Plan accordingly.
  • The Spanish mosque above the medina gives the iconic panoramic view. Walk up at sunset. It's 20 minutes from Bab el-Ansar.
  • Chefchaouen is famous for kif (cannabis). Vendors are persistent. A firm decline works. Don't engage - it leads to overpriced trouble.
  • Accommodation gets full fast in summer and Easter. Book riads at least a week ahead. The old medina is small.
  • Restaurants around Plaza Uta el-Hammam are tourist-priced. Walk two streets deeper for better food at lower prices.

Money in Chefchaouen

  • Most restaurants and hotels accept cash only. Bring sufficient MAD from your last city (Tangier or Fes). See all money & payment options for Morocco.
  • There are ATMs in the new town (Ville Nouvelle), a 15-min walk from the medina.
  • Souk bargaining is expected. Starting prices in tourist areas are 2-3ร— the fair price - know your number.
  • Tipping: 5-15 MAD for restaurant, 10-20 for riad staff per night.

First 24 hours in Chefchaouen

  • Arrival: Bus drops you near Bab el-Ansar. Walk 5 min into medina. Most riads will meet you at the bus station if arranged.
  • Afternoon: Explore the central plaza and immediate medina streets. Get lost slowly - the medina is tiny and circular.
  • Evening: Dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking Plaza Uta el-Hammam. Ask your riad for their favourite spot.
  • Day 2: Hike to Ras el-Maa waterfall (30 min from medina), Spanish mosque at sunset, early morning street photography.
